Playing in the wind

When playing in the wind the two biggest mistakes you can make are not taking enough club and trying to hit the ball too hard. If you don't take enough club and hit it too hard the wind will beat you every time.

To beat the wind you need to have control over the trajectory of the golf ball. To keep your ball trajectory lower and achieve the correct distance into a strong wind you need to take one or two more clubs and hit a punch shot.

To hit a punch shot:
  • Move the ball position back in your stance
  • Put more weight forward into your front leg
  • Position your hands ahead of the ball

Reduce your backswing and swing smoothly

Playing in the wind
Swing through to the target with a restricted follow through.

Playing in the wind
Finishing with a shorter follow through will help drive the ball low by encouraging your hands to stay ahead of the ball through impact. This action de-lofts your club, which achieves a lower ball flight with lower spin.
Be sure to practice this on the range before you head out onto the course.
